SEO Branding vs SEO
It’s a fairly common question, to have someone ask whether it is better to use a branded domain, or use SEO strategy for the domain name. Obviously, having a domain that contains keywords relative to your site is going to improve your ratings with search engines, but the issue is much deeper than SEO, and could have implications that are broader than a simple website. Let’s take a quick look at the issue, and resolve the question in a way that makes good business sense.
The world wide web no longer draws a line at your computer screen. Almost every television ad, and many radio spots, contain a url that leads to the company’s website. Web addresses are a prominent part of all other forms of advertising in a way that has never before been possible. In short, TV and radio can’t compete with the ability to give out unlimited quantities of information, catalog it specifically to meet the needs of the user, and allow that information to be available on command. For this reason, your choice of a domain name should identify your company in a clear and impression-making way. Identify your company, preferably in a way that links your company to a website devoted entirely to the products or services you offer.
SEO can still be approached, through the use of web page design, complete url of those pages, and the content that they contain. If you consider that a complete url consists of a domain, and a filename, melding SEO into domain branding isn’t a difficult task to achieve. If your company sells gadgets, then consider a domain that specifically mentions them, for example “www.goshem-gadgets.com”, where Goshem Ighty Gadgets is represented. But you may wish to talk about specific gadgets, and aim for a set of keywords that relate to them. This is where SEO comes into play, and the filename can be completed to read “www.goshem-gadgets.com/best-deals-on-gadgets-with-wheels.html” where “gadgets with wheels” is your targeted search term, and is then used for density within the content of the page, as well as used in the title and meta tags.

I think Branding calls for more of a broader sense of advertising, be it Television or radio as you mentioned or maybe it be Text media like newspaper or magazines. and SEO calls for optimizing it for web search. In branding its more likely that you try to catch the user’s attention and in SEO you optimize yourself for something that user searches.
