Directory listings are not as cut and dried as search engines. A
directory is not going to have spiders crawl your site to verify
relevance, but that is usually not a plus in your favor.. it means
you’ll have to convince the directory editors up front.
One very common mistake is to repeatedly submit a website to the
same directory. Don’t do it! If anything, multiple submissions will
be viewed as trying to waste the editor’s time, and you’ll find your
site rejected. Respectable directories want their users to be happy
people, and a webmasters that comes across as pushy or impatient is
not a good way to start out.
Start by researching the directory. Find out what they prefer from
submissions, and be sure to follow the guidelines they supply.
Identify the category that best suits your needs, and take a look at
what other websites in your category have posted. Research your
immediate competitors, as well. If you know what the competition is
doing, you are better able to stand against and rise above them.
Be accurate, and concise. Don’t waste time trying to trick
visitors into coming to your site, and don’t waste words convincing
them. Your website description should state what the site is about in
simple terms. Leading people in with false expectations is only going
to get your site banned from the directory where it was
misrepresented, not gain you thousands of eager new visitors.
As always, relevance is what it is all about. If your site sells
doughnuts, getting a listing on a bicycle directory is waste of your
time. Don’t claim to offer things you don’t really offer, and don’t
waste your time or other people’s by trying to get listings in
directories or categories that simply don’t apply to you. Define your
site for the directory listing the same as you would for a business
partner, because that’s really what a directory is- your partner is
getting the word out.
