The benefit of a having a blog on your website is questioned by
many SEO experts. And when it comes down to the final decision,
whether or not adding a blog to your website depends on a number of
factors. We can tell you what a blog will do for the site, and how to
get the most from having it. And we can tell you what you should
avoid, if you want a blog that boosts your search ratings.
Having a blog can increase the frequency your website is indexed,
or crawled, by search engine spiders. Some webmasters insist that the
blog needs to have new posts added no less than once per day. We
agree that frequent blog posting keeps the spiders coming regularly,
but are reluctant to say that you have to post just for the sake of
posting. What is accomplished by frequent postings is that it keeps
your regularly readers coming back, and that means you’ll get a
higher referral rate from real people.
On the many blogs we have participated in, the frequency of
posting has ranged from very infrequent to once or more each day. Of
interest is that all of the blogs seemed to get nearly instant
indexing from search engines such as Google. On the surface, then,
posting frequently doesn’t encourage search engines to do the
indexing. What frequent posting will accomplish, though, is that it
will keep getting your blog, and your site out there for people to
find. Simply put, if a search engine finds your blogs posts right
away, posting frequently means that your site is repeatedly found
right away, which results in higher exposure.
The best advice for a dedicated site blog is to stay in context,
and on subject. Use keywords, just as you would for other page
content, and be sure those keywords are used in the post title,
several times within the post body, and in the filenames that are
associated with the post, including the post itself and any images.
And make those keywords relevant to the overall content on the
website.
Having a blog is not necessarily going to automatically mean the
site is worth more to search engines. On the other hand, using a blog
to reinforce the content and relevance of the website can do wonders
for your SERPs. Treat each blog post as a page of its own, and
remember that all pages should be linked by the nature of the site.
Failure to do this may not hurt your ranking with search engines, but
doing so can go a long way towards helping.
