Search engines are not as single-minded as you may think at first. the algorithms which rank your website use a great deal of synthetic interpretation that may exceed what you’ve planned for. We’ve mentioned LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) before, but haven’t spent much time discussing a process known as keyword stemming, which is very similar.
If you are not familiar with the term, it is the process where the text on your page is analyzed for synonyms and other related phrases, and then that analysis is calculated into a larger set of keywords stemming from the listed set. For example, “walk” should be considered as a way to phrase other words, such as “strut” or “pace,” and when such synonyms occur as secondary keywords on a page, or even on deep linked pages, it builds additional, invisible relevance.
This allows search queries to be evaluated for a wider range of terms, and a web of supporting relevant links expand as search engines become more familiar with the nuances of human vocabulary. By comparing the use of stemmed phrases, search engines are even able to build a database of “different but equal” search terms to compare a query against.
And what exactly does all of this hinting at words being treated like math mean to you? It means that you can target a larger array of keyphrases, and that helps you relieve you of the burden of competing with more common, and likewise more expensive phrases. Many analysis programs can help you understand keyword stemming, but one of the best research methods is to try typing a variety of similar but different search queries into your favorite search engine, and look closely at the variety of results received, and how they inter-relate.
