Search engine optimization is a good thing, even if you aren’t setting out to be in competition. All of the rules of SEO are also very closely tied to the guidelines for good web site design, and following them will make your pages more appealing to human visitors as well as robotic spiders. On the Flip side, there are some misconceptions that could keep your page from ever making the top 10 list, and we’re going to look at three of the major blunders, and briefly explain why they are no good.
1. Mass Directory Listings
As a rule, any site or company that promises you “hundreds (or even thousands) of directory listings” is propagatng a scam. For one thing, the directories they will list you with are little more than online versions of random distributed flyers. The directories are referenced through direct links and page redirection, and in many cases will not hold any sort of relevance for your site. Make certain that every directory your site is listed with is relevant to exactly what your site is about.
2. Keyword Overload
If every 5th word on your site is your keyword, it isn’t going to be popular with spiders or humans. Human visitors are quickly turned away from blatant advertising, and you wwould do well that the average page visit online is lessthan 29 seconds to begin with. So you have MAYBe 20 seconds to get a person’s attention, and make them want to stay. Don’t waste that time repeating yourself needlessly. Keep your keyword densities below 5%, and you should be okay.
3. Special Toolbar Myths
Installing the Google toolbar isn’t going to make your website more popular. The Alexa toolbar doesn’t pull in more visitors, or increase your chance of making a sale. There are no shortcuts to getting high rankings with leading search engines and directories. There is no exception to this. Filling your browser window with optimistic toolbars will only serve to make your browser run slower. For one thing, most of those toolbars are using your information to make their projections, so the data you are presented with is skewed by your own visits to the page, and their meaning is lost. Create a quality website, follow the SEO rules, and be patient. That’s the only way.
