In a world fueled in large part by words, semantic logic is important. As a webmaster or SEO designer, your job is to use a very short list of words and phrases to attract the greatest number of site visitors possible, and even convert those visitors in what is known in the business as ROI, or Return On Investment.
The definition of semantics:
In computing, semantics is the assumed or explicit set of understandings used in a system to give meaning to data.
What this means, in simple terms, is that a phrase or word is evaluated for its explicit meaning. This is the heart of using keywords for SEO, but it is an inherently unreliable foundation, given the myriad of words contained in the English language alone. In effect, certain words become more commonly used than others, and the tendency is to gravitate towards using only those words or phrases. Not only is this process not something new for the internet, it represents the way language itself develops.
If your website offers a variety of computers, parts, printers, and etc, make use of variations in expression to catch as many would be customers as possible. For instance, if “computers” is your primary (and very much coveted) keyword, consider variations to help attract people who type something a little out of the ordinary. In addition to the primary keywords, use things such as “desktop pc”, “windows pc”, and even “windows machine.” Don’t attempt to use them to density in your page, but list them as keywords.
Why? Because some people don’t know what they are looking for and type “windows machine” in the search query. You’ve added a new phrase that is semantically identical to the primary keyword, detracts nothing from your website, and gives you an added search engine rank in a category that has fewer competitors.
